Carbon removes contaminants by adsorption, and adsorption needs two things: mass and contact time. An in-head cartridge gives you about a second of contact at full flow. So the canister goes on the tap, where your hose screws in, holding activated carbon fibre — many times what fits inside a showerhead. The hose then screws onto the canister and your PureGuard head on the other end of the shower hose. Every drop runs through the canister first, then through the second carbon stage in the head, before it reaches you.
Chlorine, and the organic compounds chlorine forms in the water supply. Plus rust and sediment from older pipes. Activated carbon is what municipal treatment plants use for exactly this — it's the only common filter media that adsorbs already-formed chlorination by-products rather than just converting free chlorine.
Both routes matter. You inhale these compounds and your skin absorbs them, and hot water increases both.

Findings from published research on shower water:
How much your skin absorbs compared to your lungs. Volunteers showered in wetsuits to isolate the routes. Both came out about the same.
How much of it your liver filters. Drink chlorinated water and your liver processes it first. Breathe it or absorb it and it goes straight into your blood.
Hotter water pulls measurably more through your skin than 95°F/35°C. Same water, same ten minutes, more of it in you.
The rise in blood chloroform after a ten-minute shower at 64 µg/L in the water. Double the concentration in the water, roughly double the level in your blood.
How much opening a window changes it. Cutting bathroom air levels by 75% moved blood concentration by almost nothing. The fan isn't the fix.

This is by far the nicest, most luxurious shower head I’ve ever owned! I’ve always thought that waterfall shower heads were the best but nothing compares to being able to hold the shower head like I can with this one! I was a bit nervous that the water pressure was going to be weak but boy was I wrong, this thing is POWERFUL!If your shower hasn’t been caulked in a while or if you notice any small cracks I would suggest re caulking just to be on the safe side. My shower had a few small cracks that I didn’t notice since the water didn’t hit them with my old shower head. Luckily I read a tutorial about handheld shower heads online which advised doing so, as the water will now be hitting the full shower wall surface, which can cause leaks if not properly caulked.The installation was surprisingly easy, I was scared that I’d do something wrong but everything worked out perfectly!I’ve never had a shower head with a water filter and now that I do I wish I would’ve gotten one sooner! I’ve been using this for a little over a month and I can already feel a huge difference in the softness of my skin and my hair looks smoother and silkier as well!The super strong water pressure provides a massaging effect and feels great on stiff muscles or joints. A lot of design went into this shower wand. It sprays filtered water out the circle and there are two brushes, one soft and one harder, that fit inside and let you put liquid soap in so you are washing and rinsing at the same time. Ingenius. Also the handle feels great to hold and it has a very modern and new look to it. Pressure is good and water flows well.

I have only used this shower head a couple of times, but so far I'm really enjoying it! Here are a couple of the things I like:Ease of Installation: There are only a few instructions on the box and I thought for sure I'd need to pull up a video to figure out how to install it, but it was so easy I didn't need to, and I didn't need any tools. I literally just unscrewed my old shower head, screwed in the mount, then the hose, then the shower head, and done. I didn't even need to redo the tape around the threads, there were no leaks at all. I could see some people needing a wrench or having to retape the threads, but even that wouldn't be much work. Pleasantly surprised!Water Pressure: This shower head has great pressure, but in a very different way than I'm used to. Because it has smaller but more numerous holes than a typical shower head, the water comes out very strong but soft (almost like a very substantial mist). I liked how this felt on my skin, and it easily washed out all of the shampoo and conditioner in my very long hair, which is important to me.Even though I've only used it a few times, it seems to be better for my hair and skin...I live in a very dry climate and struggle a bit with dandruff, but it was noticeably reduced after using this shower head, without changing anything else. I'm not sure if that's from the filter or from the way the water comes out, but it's a happy side effect! I haven't used the two extra pieces that come with it (a soft brush and a foaming scrubber) but they seem to also be high quality.Overall, I think this is a great shower head, especially for the price. It's a definite upgrade from typical shower heads, and makes for a very pleasant shower. I highly recommend this shower head, especially if you aren't fond of the "rain" style ones and don't need fifteen different spray settings.
